Comilla Victorians claim 2015 BPL title

Comilla Victorians have edged Barisal Bulls in a thrilling final to be crowned the champions of the third edition of the Bangladesh Premier League.

With the three-wicket win on Tuesday, Mashrafe Bin Mortaza have now won his third successive BPL title as captain.

Before this, Mashrafe had led Dhaka Gladiators to the title in the 2012 and 2013 editions of BPL.

Alok Kapali (39 not out off 28 balls) held his nerves to take his team over the line in the last ball of the match in an electric atmosphere at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium Mirpur.

Needing 23 runs off the last two overs, the Victorians stumbled in Kevon Cooper's first two balls when they lost Darren Stevens (8) and Mashrafe (0) in successive balls.

But Kapali hit consecutive boundaries to bring the equation down to 13 off 6 balls.

The Comilla franchise lost Shuvagata Home Chowdhury (1) in the first ball of the final over before Kapali cracked two more fours, ran a double and then a single to send the Victorians fans into spasms of delight.

Opener Imrul Kayes had laid the groundwork for the chase, which eclipsed a superb effort from Mahmudullah.

The Bulls skipper ended up on the losing side despite a scintillating fourth-wicket stand with Shahriar Nafees that lifted his team to 157 for 7. He was also involved in four crucial dismissals.

Kayes (53 off 37 balls) looked ominous from the start of the chase. He hit four glorious boundaries in the first two overs to set the Victorians off to a flier.

After Litton Kumer Das (3) failed to rise to the occasion, Kayes paired with Ahmed Shehzad (30) to put 52 runs on the board.

They had tipped the game in their favour by hitting regular boundaries before Mahmudullah stepped up and sent Shehzad back.

Kayes tried to soak up the pressure by hitting two consecutive sixes over long-on and, in the process, reached his half-century off just 33 balls. Mahmudllah struck again to send the left-handed opener back.

Ashar Zaidi (16) survived a flurry of swings and misses before running himself out to leave the game hanging in the balance.

Kapali then took charge and powered his team over the finishing line.

A gritty 81-run stand off 56 balls between captain Mahmudullah (48) and Nafees (44 not out off 31 balls) had earlier taken the Bulls, invited to bat first by Mashrafe, to the fighting total.

Although the ball was coming on to the bat, the Bulls' openers remained vigilant early on before Seekkuge Prasanna (33 off 19 balls) speared the first boundary through cover in the third over.

Mehedi Maruf (11) launched the first six but Zaidi got his man with his next ball when the opener missed a pull to be struck in front. Prasanna soon perished when Stevens went through his gates.

The Bulls had pinned much hope on Sabbir Rahman after his back-to-back match-winning knocks in the last four. But he went down to a rash shot off skipper Mashrafe after a sedate 9 off 19 balls.

Nafees and Mahmudullah then settled in and got into the groove by milking Mashrafe for 16 in his fourth over to take their team past 100 in the 15th over.

The duo showed unwavering determination to extract boundaries on either side of the wicket. They hammered Abu Hider Rony for 18 in the penultimate over.

The skipper was bowled by Kulasekara before Kevon Cooper (7 not out) bludgeoned a six to help his team post a total in excess of 150.
