Dreading until I see the newspapers - Gayantha

Dreading until I see the newspapers - Gayantha Featured

Some news articles published are completely contradictory to what was originally stated, says minister of media and parliamentary reforms - Gayantha Karunatillake.

Because of this, I am dreading until I see the newspapers the day after I make a speech, he says.

Speaking at a discussion organised by 'Ada Derana' today (04,) the minister said that renowned journalist Julius Fučík had said that there are three categories of journalists. One - those who take the public backward, two - those who retain the public as they are and three - those who take the public forward.

Although there are journalists falling to all three categories more focus should be put on the third type, he added.

The programme was on the challenges faced by modern journalists.

Independent Regulatory Authority
Speaking, Deputy media minister - Karunaratne Paranavithana says that it has become essential to establish an independent Regulatory Authority for media to ensure proper direction.

Noting that this authority should not be interfered by the state in any way, the deputy minister said that it should be established from within the media and not through receiving parliament approval after being formulated by the ministry.
