Displaying slogans in Sinhala, Tamil and English, around 1,000 protestors called to scrap the plan for the power plant and handed over an epistle addressed to the President to the Mutter Divisional secretariat.
Speaking to ‘BBC Sandeshaya’, Mohommad Buhari of the Muttur Green Movement said that in vain, they had attempted to stop the project on several instances.
“This could become a serious issue especially for the future generation. Therefore, we are attempting to raise public awareness on the adverse effects of this project,” he said.
'Earlier, the environmental reports had said that the project could be commenced as there were no people living in the immediate area. Those days, many were displaced and in camps. But with the President starting the resettlement process, people have started to live in the immediate area. Now there is an environmental issue,' he added.
Noting that a 15km radius from the plant would face environmental issues, Buhari also said that as the majority of native villagers are farmers and fishermen, they too would face issues while engaging in their profession.
