Legal aid paid for victims of wrongful termination doubled Featured

Minister of Labour and Trade Union Relations W.D.J. Seneviratne has taken measures to increase the legal aid allowance provided by Department of Labour to private sector employees , who were wrongfully terminated from service, from Rs 10,000 to Rs. 20,000.

The increase has taken effect since 16th of this month.

Speaking to 'Sri Lanka Mirror' a senior official attached to the ministry stated that there are frequent complaints on employers arbitrarily terminating the service of the employees in private sector.

He stated that the particular amount is paid from Shrama Vasana fund.

Following the increase Minister W.D.J. Seneviratne symbolically offered legal aid allowance to 15 employees who were wrongfully terminated from service at a seminar organized by Shrama Vasana Fund in order to raise awareness among the private sector employees.

The employees who face wrongful termination will be able to obtain an amount of Rs. 20,000 as legal aid allowance for any complaint being inquired at Labour Court, Labour Tribunal, Commissioner for Workmen's Compensation or Termination of Employment Unit at the Department of Labour.
