The TNA has charged the Navy is allowing businesses to take place in a fisheries harbour banned for northern fishermen.
Businesses are taking place at the Mailatti fisheries harbour under Navy protection, TNA MPs told fisheries minister Mahinda Amaraweera during his two-day inspection visit to Jaffna from January 10.

E. Saravanabhavan, Mavai Senadhiraja and M.A. Sumanthiran accompanied the minister on the tour.

The harbour is being used to unload cement, named ‘Ramco’ being shipped from India, reports say.

Northern fishermen placed their grievances before the minister, including poaching by Indian fishermen.

At a media briefing, Amaraweera said he has instructed the Navy to arrest at least 500 Indian fishermen immediately.

On the night of January 11, he went out to sea with fishermen and observed more than 100 Indian fishing boats, Amaraweera told Sri Lanka Mirror.

All houses located in the vicinity of Mailatti harbour had been destroyed in the war and no resettlement had taken place there so far, radiogagana.com reports.
