Soothsaying by Buddhist monks to be banned!

Soothsaying by Buddhist monks to be banned! Featured

The government has decided to introduce legislation to ban Buddhist monks from engaging in or promoting soothsaying and occultism.

The relevant draft act was tabled in parliament today (12).

Also, it will be illegal for them under the new act to carry out businesses and to drive vehicles.

Other than religious, social and educational services, they will not be able to do jobs in either the state or the public sectors.

Furthermore, it will be against the law for Buddhist monks to behave inappropriately in public places.

A court of Sangha will try offenders and hand punishment, up to disrobing.

A magistrate will be able to impose fines of Rs. 50,000 or sentence to a six month prison term.

The new act will also decide, on a ruling by three chapters, the colour of the robes worn by monks.
