‘Arrests will not compromise national security’

Defence state minister Ruwan Wijayawardena has refuted claims that national security would be compromised by the arrest of military intelligence men suspected to be connected to the disappearance of journalist Prageeth Ekneligoda.

He said so in parliament yesterday (15) in response to a question raised by UPFA’s Jayantha Samaraweera.

Of the 11 intelligence men arrested over the disappearance, six have been released, he said.

Four serving officers were arrested and one of them was released, according to the state minister.

The CID has made these arrests, and police have not obtained any information other than the ones relating to the matter they were investigating, he added.
