A new constitution based on a parliamentary cabinet!

The cabinet subcommittee headed by prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and tasked with formulating a new constitution is in the process of discussing a new constitution based on a parliamentary cabinet after abolishing executive presidency with the conclusion of the tenure of incumbent Maithripala Sirisena, ‘Ravaya' reports.

It met on November 28 and also focused on an electoral system that gives representation to minority parities, and agreed to prioritize the formulation of the new constitution following the budget, said committee member Mano Ganeshan.

Committee member Wijeyadasa Rajapakse said the committee elaborated on various subject matters relating to a constitutional amendment.

Once the basic shape of the constitution is conceptualized, an open dialogue will begin to finalize and adopt a new constitution within a period of six months, he said.

Yesterday (03), the cabinet approved the subcommittee also comprising D.M. Swaminathan, Nimal Siripala de Silva, Susil Premajayantha, Lakshman Kiriella, Malik Samarawickrama, Rauff Hakeem, Risath Badurdeen and Champika Ranawaka.
