Geneva report : No military or political bigwig accused

Geneva report : No military or political bigwig accused Featured

The much anticipated UN report on the alleged war crimes on Sri Lanka will not be one sided or critical of both combat parties, veteran journalist Sunanda Deshapriya reports, from Geneva.

The report by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) will unveiled during the 30th session of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva, which begins today (September 14).

It is said that the report will not directly accuse any military or political bigwig as UN conventions deem it is wrong to directly accuse an individual without holding a fair trial.

However, it is said that military contingents linked to such alleged crimes are likely to be named.

Meanwhile, the 'Divaina' newspaper says that the report will reveal military areas where certain military personnel who allegedly violated humanitarian law were attached to.

Although the report has not directly mentioned names, the military personnel are exposed by the other details in the report, the newspaper adds.

It further adds that the LTTE is only accused of recruiting child soldiers.

The High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein has handed over the report to the Sri Lankan government last Friday (11).

However, highly placed sources say that the Sri Lankan government is not expected to publicise the report until it is launched in Geneva on Sep. 30.

A Sri Lankan delegation led by Sri Lanka Foreign Minister - Mangala Samaraweera and Justice minister Wijayadasa Rajapaksa is already in Geneva and Mr. Samaraweera is expected to address the event at 11.40am today.
