He was born on 03 September 1951 at Yagoda in Gampaha, and S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike formed the SLFP a day previously.

He joined the SLFP’s youth league in Polonnaruwa in 1967 and was imprisoned during the 1971 JVP insurgency.

He was elected the seventh president of Sri Lanka at the January 08th election.
