The ministers had requested ex-Parliamentarian s to recruit SLFP activists for government jobs in violation of standard procedures of the government. When the UPFA government was in power, Rajapaksa did not hold any official position that allowed him to take measures to recruit workers for government.
In addition to his role as a Parliamentarian, Rajapaksa headed the now defunct youth organization "Nil Balakaya" and "Tharunayayata Hetak" organizations. "Nil Balakaya" functioned as the youth front of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party when the previous government was in power.
The letters also showed that individuals had been recommended for government jobs on the grounds of their political affiliations with the Sri Lanka Freedom Party.
Among the ministers and deputy ministers of the former government who sent letters to the Parliamentarian are former Passenger Transport Minister C. B. Ratnayake, Former Ports and Special Projects Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardena, Deputy Speaker Chandima Weerakkody and former Deputy Minister Sanath Jayasuriya.
In a startling turn of events, former Minister of Ports Rohitha Abeygunawardena, had requested a letter from the ex-Parliamentarian seeking his permission to recruit workers for state bodies that came under the purview of his own ministry.
