The lives of around 1,400 heart patients are in danger as the crisis at the Cardio Thoracic Unit (CTU) of the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital remains unresolved, reports say.

Sources say that the patients on the surgery list Consultant Cardiologist Dr. Namal Gamage are facing this risk after he had stopped performing surgeries since May 12 due to lack of facilities and suitable safe environment for patients.

In this backdrop, only 08 surgeries have been done in this unit since then.

Speaking to 'Sri Lanka Mirror' on this regard, Deputy Director of the Hospital, Dr. Jayampathy Senanayake said all specialists have arrived at a consensus over using the unit's surgery and discussions are to be held today as well.

Noting that the Ministry of Health has been notified of the issue, Dr. Senanayake hoped that they would be able to find a solution soon.
