A minor incident involving a handful of persons in June 2014 worsened into a major clash which caused damage to life and property.

Police imposed a curfew and Army was called in to bring the situation under control.

However, properties owned by Muslims were set on fire.

The then Rajapaksa administration was careful not to implicate Bodu Bala Sena which was directly responsible for the clashes, or criticise police over its conduct.

A Darga Town resident said his damaged house was repaired by the Army, while many other houses are still under construction.

A special security arrangement is still in place there.
