Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) is making preparations to prevent the fraudulent activities carried out using mobile phone SIM cards.

Deputy Director (Consumer Relations) of the TRCSL Menaka H Pathirana addressing media has stated that a procedure is to be introduced when issuing SIM cards where not only submission of a copy of the National Identity Card but also the documents proving the residence will be made mandatory requirements.

The particular measure will be taken as the fraudulent activities which are carried out by using the SIM cards of deceased individuals and misplaced SIM cards are increasing by the day.

When the SIM cards were initially introduced to the island the particular procedure was followed, however with the increased competition between communication service providers the practice was ignored, she said.

She has strictly advised the public to not let their SIM cards to be get into the hands of a stranger.
