20A facing a standstill?

20A facing a standstill? Featured

The process to introduce fresh electoral reforms under the 20th Amendment is facing a standstill, reports say.

A special discussion on introducing fresh electoral reforms was held at the Parliament Complex recently under the auspices of Dr. Sarath Amunugama.

At the meeting, Director of Strategic Enterprise Management Agency Asoka Abeygunawardana has said that this was the 5th time he was explaining the new electoral system to the parliamentarians.

The 20th amendment to the constitution proposes that the number of MPs should be increase to 255 and Leader of the Mahajana Eksath Peramuna leader - Dinesh Gunewardena has flatly opposed this while UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has said that the UNP will agree to it only if other parties representing parliament agree to it.

Soon afterwards, Wickremesinghe has left the meeting and JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake has wondered what happened to the set of proposals tabled by his party on the matter.

In reply, Dr. Amunugama has said that one proposal of the JVP has been included.

However the discussion ended in a stalemate with the Bill most likely to be delayed, reports add.
