It is said that 439 Karunka (Arecanut) containers are cluttered at the Port after failing to secure the Temporary Import for Export Purpose (TIEP) permit for re-exportation of Karunka.

The value of these containers amount to Rs. 1050 million.

Earlier, the Rajapaksa regime had taken measures to issue permits under the TIEP scheme to two companies. The companies are namely 4S and Wayamba Traders.

Although 02 permits were issued, the Karunka re-exportation was solely done by Wayamba Traders during the last five years.

At the present, 04 companies have applied for the permit to re-export Karunka to India, which was initially brought in to Sri Lanka from Indonesia.

These companies are namely 4S, Wayamba Traders, Golden Foods and 4R Agro.

The ministry of Finance has also pointed out that the government can earn Rs. 1000 million annually by issuing permits for Karunka re-exportation.
