The Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) has proposed that the group which backed President Maithripala Sirisena should contest the upcoming Gen. election under the 'Swan' symbol if the pro-Mahinda Rajapaksa group decides to leave the UPFA and contest the election separately.

The JHU has made the proposal to the President.

Meanwhile, it is reported that Ven. Athuraliye Rathana Thera is spearheading a task to bring about a new front affliated to the President.

The Thera has even had several rounds of discussion on this regard with Democratic Party leader - Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka, sources reveal.

Fonseka has been of the opinion that a new front backed by him should be formed in order to prevent President Maithripala Sirisena from being weakened politically.

The Thera has also held talks with Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) leader Rauff Hakeem at the part headquarters, say sources who describe discussion as 'heated'.

Although several minority parties have expressed assent to contest under the UPFA ticket, attempts are being made to launch a broad new front in a backdrop where the UPFA is facing a threat of being divided to two.
