Decision on Opp. leader deferred

Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa today (07) informed Parliament that the decision on naming the opposition leader would be deferred.

The speaker informed Parliament that he was still studying the matter.

Meanwhile, some of United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) members accepted portfolios in the government, other opposition parties have staked claim for the post.

This morning, a letter, signed by more than 60 UPFA MPs calling for the appointment of the MP Dinesh Gunawardena as the Opposition Leader replacing Nimal Siripala de Silva, was handed over to Speaker Rajapaksa.

Earlier, TNA leader R. Sampanthan said that the TNA claims right to the position of opposition leader.

Noting that the UPFA has become a government affiliate after its MPs accepted ministerial and deputy ministerial portfolios, Sampanthan said that the TNA claims right to the position of opposition leader as it has the next highest number of seats in parliament.
