SLT’s buying Rajapaksa firm questioned

SLT’s buying Rajapaksa firm questioned Featured

Sri Lanka Telecom has bought a firm owned by the family of former president Mahinda Rajapaksa for Rs. 588 million without citing any acceptable reason, and also wasted Rs. 600 m more on this company, the auditor general’s department has found.

The firm, Sky Networks (Pvt.) Ltd., has been registered under N (PVS) 46/22 on 08 May 2006, with Himal Lalindra Hettiarachchi, son of the ex-president’s sister, and Hettiarachchige Sirisena and Konara Mudiyanselage Senarathna Bandara as its directors.

The SLT director board has bought the company by claiming to expand SLT’s audio and data service through wimax technology and that SLT was not having the required frequencies for the purpose.

However, the AG’s department says in a report the 100 per cent SLT owned Mobitel has the wimax technology as well as the required frequencies, while both companies have the trained technical staff.

After SLT bought the company on 16 May 2008, Himal Hettiarachchi had been paid Rs. 01 m as director fees although he holds less than one pc of its shares, ‘Ravaya’ reports.
