Discussions between President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga on transferring the President's executive powers to parliament, have ended in consensus, reports say.

The discussion has taken place on March 18.

Transferring of the President's executive powers to parliament had become an issue due to the following reason.

The President being the leader of the Cabinet of ministers, the government and state enabled the certain individual holding that post to take solitary decisions on certain issues instead of arriving at decisions after discussions with the Prime minister and the ministers.

According to unconfirmed sources, the President, Prime minister and the former President has taken up this issue at length and had agreed to introduce constitutional reforms which allows to retain these powers only during the tenure of Maithripala Sirisena and to transfer them to parliament with the tenure of the next President.

At the last party leader meeting that convened over amending the constitution, party leaders had urged Maithripala Sirisena, Ranil Wickremesinghe and Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga to arrive at a consensus on this regard.
