The local electricity sector will be in crisis by 2020 due to its failure to meet the demand, warns Dr. Thilak Siyambalapitiya.

The country was affected similarly in 2000 after it failed to begin construction of the Sampur coal power plant as scheduled, he says.

The delay in this plant’s construction and increase in demand will force the country to again rely on high-cost diesel power plants, he says.

According to him, the construction of the 500 mw Sampur plant will take up five years.

The agreement for the 512 million dollar project was signed with India in 2013 but it has been delayed due to various reasons.
