Drug Policy was passed without a majority

The National Medicinal Drug Regulatory Act that was guided by Prof. Senaka Bibile’s pharmaceutical policies was passed in parliament without a majority in parliament.

Only 69 out of the 225 MPs in parliament participated in the vote on the piece of legislation.

When the bill was passed in parliament with amendments only 18 MPs from the UNP had voted in favor of the bill and the absence of many government ministers in the house was also noted.

The Act had 68 votes in favor and 18 of it were from the UNP. Three MPs from the SLMC and MPs from the TNA and the DNA who were present at the occasion also voted in favor of the legislation.
