Several days earlier, it was reported that Major General Jagath Rambukpotha was to be appointed as the next Army Commander with effect from February 22.

However, issuing a media statement on this regard, the Defence ministry, on Feb. 18th stated that no decision has been taken on the appointment of a new army commander by the Ministry.
