Farmers and rice mill owners have become helpless as a result of the CWE’s marketing of poisoned rice at reduced prices, reports say.

The per kilo certified price of paddy is Rs. 50 for Samba and Rs. 45 for Naadu, but Samba imported from Pakistan can be bought at Rs. 50 per kilo.

Small mill owners who buy paddy at Rs. 45 – Rs. 50 can sell the milled rice at a price between Rs. 60 – Rs. 70.

The CWE is selling the rice at Rs. 50 a kilo, as the government has imposed a control price of Rs. 70 for Samba and Rs. 65 for Naadu.

The CWE still has around 75,000 metric tons of poisoned rice, which is adequate for three months.

Highlighting this situation, a poster by the small rice mill owners association pasted posters island wide today (19), seeks the intervention of the president and minister Risard Badurdeen.
