UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s note on the agenda for the 28th session of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) this March has reportedly listed the report on Sri Lanka as part of the topics to be discussed at the session.
The UNHRC is to hold its 28th sessions from March 2nd till the 27th in Geneva and a report on the probe on Sri Lanka conducted by the UNHRC following a resolution adopted at the Council’s sessions last March is scheduled to be presented for discussion next month.
However, the new government of Sri Lanka is campaigning for the postponement of the presentation of the UNHRC report.
Nevertheless, the report on Sri Lanka is still listed in the UNHRC agenda as a topic to be taken up at the Council on March 25th.
The resolution adopted on Sri Lanka last March called on the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) to monitor the human rights situation in Sri Lanka, to undertake a comprehensive investigation into alleged serious violations of human rights during the period covered by the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission, and to present a comprehensive report followed by a discussion on the implementation of that resolution at its twenty-eighth session.
