Several major factors including the abolishing of executive presidency and reinstating independent commissions which are considered as corner stones of the common opposition's policies, have already been cast aside, political analyst and senior journalist Kusal Perera charges.

He adds that the government has already broken their pledge to introduce electoral reforms before the next election.

Kusal Perera was speaking to 'BBC Sandeshaya' over the factors mentioned by President Maithripala Sirisena while addressing the Independence Day celebrations yesterday (05).

Good sign
Perera viewed the participation of the Tamil National Alliance at the Independence Day celebrations, as a positive sign of social reconciliation in the country.

Reconciliation and eradication of poverty being stated as objectives in the President's Independence Day message too, is a positive trend, he added.
