Environment activist Ravindra Kariyawasam has brought it the notice of the government that the hotel complex can pose a grave danger to nature and the eco-system in the area if the project is not halted and that his appeals to former President Mahinda Rajapaksa to shelve the venture had fallen on deaf ears.
Kariyawasam has now sent a letter to President Maithripala Sirisena highlighting the negative impact the project will have on the environment.
The land area on which the project is to be constructed covers 628 acres and was sold for Rs. 6 million.
It also poses a threat to the government's Rs.850 million Weli Oya project which could destroy the livelihoods of thousands of farmers and contaminate the water resources in the area.
The Weli Oya project is meant to safeguard a vast area of water resources found in the area from natural springs which if not taken care of will affect several outlying villages which depend on the eco-system found in this nature reserve at Haldamulla.
