He was thus quoted by media at a progamme in Nayamulla, Matara last week.
"Even we wanted him to become the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party," he added.
"We must preprare for the next election and should make this leap in July. I was informed that President Maithripala's decision at that election would not cause injustice to the United National Party (UNP), Ranil Wickremesighe says.
