Attempt to urge postponement of Geneva report

Attempt to urge postponement of Geneva report Featured

Although a special report on the alleged war crimes in Sri Lanka is to be presented before the UNHRC in March, the government is keen on getting this postponed till September after urging to consider the present political situation in the country.

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights - Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein has said that the report is to include investigations done between January 2014 - December 2014 as well as the activity of the LLRC appointed by the previous government.

However, embassy sources say that the report set to be tabled on March is to level war crimes allegations against former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, former defence secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and former Army commander Sarath Fonseka.

The government suspects that the former President will attempt to obtain a political advantage at the next General elections by securing the sympathy of the Sinhalese-Buddhist vote base, if this report is issued in March.

The government hopes to hold a General election in April once the 100 day work programme concludes.
