Moves to bring back Mahinda through new alliance Featured

Former Minister Wimal Weerawansa is said to be going flat out to form an alliance with his National Freedom Front party to bring back disgraced former President Mahinda Rajapaksa into contesting the upcoming General election, highly placed sources told srilankamirror.

Known for his comedy talk, Weerawansa is said to be discussing the importance of enlisting all remnants of so-called patriotic movements to form the alliance.

Weerawansa is said to have shown a willingness to enlist Mahinda Rajapaksa as secretary of a party called the National Patriotic Front. The post is currently held by former Parliamentarian Piyasili Wijenayake.

Meanwhile several small parties favourable to Rajapaksa are also said to be looking into the prospects of forming an alliance.

The Mahajana Eksath Peramuna, the Jathika Nidahas Peramuna, the Communist Party, the Socialist Party and the Pivithuru Hela Urumaya are in the process of finalising arrangements while leftist stalwart Vasudeva Nanayakkara is said to have given his blessings.

Former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa is said to be pressuring some parties into forming the alliance.
