Senaratne, who crossed over with Maithripala Sirisena from the then Rajapaksa government, played a major role in the mammoth task of ensuring that the latter was elected President.

In the past, Senaratne has held major portfolios in several political parties such as Sri Lanka Mahajana Party, Bahujana Nidahas Peramuna and the United National Party.
