A move is underway to probe the many irregular and unscheduled use and abuse of aircraft belonging to the Air Force from January 4 to 7, srilankamirror learns.

It follows a report published in a Sunday newspaper last week which revealed that aircraft belonging to the Air Force were used with unsanctioned random by high profile figures in the run-up to the Presidential election.

The aircraft in question are MI17 and Bell 412 helicopters along with a fixed wing transport plane (MA60) all which made numerous trips from Colombo, Ratmalana, Wariyapola, Anuradhapura and Hingurakgoda among other destinations.

On January 12 a Y12 aircraft was used by Namal Rajapaksa, the former President's son, to travel from Colombo to Matale and Anuradhapura.

Even on the eve of the January 8 Presidential election the Y12 aircraft was used for election propaganda.
