The India media also reported that one of the several places that she was kept and raped was in the premises of Buddhism's most hallowed places of worship at Buddhagaya in the State of Bihar.
The Japanese student is said to have been raped over a month.
Calcutta's Assistant Superintendent of Police said that the victim was lured by two of the five arrested men on the pretext of showing her around and then taken to various locations, including Buddhagaya, where they took turns to commit rape.
After fleeing from her captors the Japanese student had made her way to her country's embassy in Calcutta where she lodged her complaint and related her tale of woe.
Indian police have confirmed that an organised gang was on the prowl targetting young women.
