Noting that no decision has been taken to postpone polls despite prevailing adverse weather conditions, he added that no candidate has made such a request directly, through a representative or a lawyer.
The elections commissioner was responding to queries raised by 'Sri Lanka Mirror' over certain media reports claiming that there is a plan to postpone the presidential election and that common opposition candidate Maithripala Sirisena and his lawyers have made such a request.
However, at the last meeting with Presidential candidates, secretaries of the contesting political parties, permanent election representatives and accepted election monitoring bodies, it was suggested to extend the time period to issue temporary IDs and to deliver the ballot papers as such activities are being hampered due to prevailing weather conditions islandwide.
Accordingly, issuing temporary IDs will now take place until Jan. 03 while delivering ballot papers will be done until Jan. 04, the Elections commissioner further added.
