Mental retirement for Welgama: occupational retirement for Narada Featured

Nimal Welgama- Owner of Upali Newspapers (Pvt) Ltd (UNL) which publishes The Island and Divaina newspapers has been kind enough to grant retirement to Editor of Divaina – Narada Nissanka on his 55th birthday.

It is a public secret that although Narada was the nominal editor of Divania content and pages of the newspaper decided by the famous Film Director Jayantha Chandrasiri.

The reason was that Narada had vehemently refused to in line with Mahinda Rajapaksa’s political agenda.

The veteran journalist was instrumental in setting up trade unions in UNL and even served as the President of the UNL Employees’ Union.

On the very day that he completed 55 years Welgama was kind enough to honour Narada with a call and break the news that his services were no longer needed at UNL.

Welgama has offered transport facility for Narada should he needed it, but Narada had been straightforward enough to refuse Welgama’s generosity.

It is reported to Sri Lanka Mirror that Narada who tirelessly served Divaina for over three decades went home by bus after bidding farewell to his colleagues.

However, seeing the treatment accorded by Welgama to Narada a majority of staff at Divaina seem to be utterly disgusted with some stating that ‘No point in working our butt out. We too will get the same treatment one day!”

Divaina which was highly popular few years back has seen its circulation figures crashing since of late.
