Trade minister Malik Samarawickrama is said to be dejected after Prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has decided to appoint former Central Bank Governor - Arjun Mahendran to chair the development project plan seeking to create one million employment opportunities, internal sources say.

Ahead of last year’s General Election, Wickremesinghe pledged to create one million employment opportunities for the country’s youth.

The government’s future development projects falling under the government’s 5-year plan seeks to make this a reality.

Mahendran, touted as an economic expert is to be assisted by several bigwigs of the state and private sectors, for this plan.

International agreements

In the next 4 years, international agreements including the proposed trade agreement with Singapore and the proposed economic agreement with China are to be reached.

The Prime minister has also tasked Mahendran with steering all operations pertaining to the signing of the ETCA agreement with India later this year.

Malik Samarawickrama and Arjun Mahendran are both contemporaries of Ranil Wickremesinghe at Royal College.

Malik, who is also a powerful businessman with strong links to President Maithripala Sirisena as well as to former Presidents Mahinda Rajapaksa and Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, was said to be criticised by the PM for being ‘aloof’ when Mahendran faced charges over the Bond Issue.
