Malik denies influencing on behalf of Mahendran

Minister Malik Samarawickrama says he has not influenced anyone in order to get the tenure of Central Bank governor Arjun Mahendran extended.

Presently on an official visit to China, Samarawickrama has responded to an article published yesterday (25) by Sri Lanka Mirror.

He said he has explained to the prime minister the political crisis that has arisen over the Mahendran issue, noting that priority should be given for the government while giving consideration to the opinions of the parties that contributed to its formation.

Samarawickrama also said it was not on his advice that Mahendran has told the finance board meeting that he would not expect an extension when his term ended on June, until COPE released its observation reports into the treasury bond issues of 2015 and 2016.
