Vice chancellor Wasanthi Arseculeratnam has made the announcement.

Minister D.M. Swaminathan, Anura Priyadarshana Yapa and deputy minister Karunaratne Paranawithana visited the university yesterday and held talks.

The university was closed following a clash between two student groups at the weekend.

Yapa told the media that the reopening would be timed for the smooth functioning of the campus exams on July 20 and 21.

All student parties to the clash have expressed regret and assured there would be no repetitions, he said.

A disciplinary inquiry would be held into the incident, Paranawithana said.

Swaminathan said the university had not been divided as Tamils and Sinhalese, and that certain groups were trying to gain political mileage out of a minor incident.

Heads of the Sinhala and Tamil students unions of the university told the media that they would take the responsibility that there would be no recurrences of this nature.

Racists on both sides are trying to use the opportunity to achieve their political agendas, they and the lecturers charged.

Lecturer Saminathan Wimal said violence should be wiped out, BBC Sandeshaya reports.
