Why Sri Lanka was invited to CAEXPO Featured

Sri Lanka has been invited to take part in the 13th China-ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO) exhibition at Nanning in China mainly due to her strategic location in the Maritime Silk Road, said secretary-general of the CAEXPO secretariat Wang Lei.

He was responding to a question raised at a media briefing today (14) at the conclusion of the exhibition.

A main aim of the exhibition this year was the creation of the 21st century Maritime Silk Road, in which Sri Lanka has been identified as a strategic location.

Up to now, CAEXPO was confined to 11 countries only, but with its expansion with countries in the Silk Road, the membership is expected to be raised to 16, he said.

That is why Sri Lanka has been invited to attend as a special guest country, said the secretary general.

He went onto say that this has been the most successful CAEXPO ever, and it was expanded to outside of the ASEAN region with the participation of countries like India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Many participating nations have been able to gain achievements bilaterally, he said.

Thirty four conferences have been organized on the sidelines of the exhibition.

On its final day, which incidentally was a day open to the public, there was a huge gathering of visitors at the exhibition.

Stalls by Sri Lanka drew big crowds, while a major attraction for items on display were the Sri Lankan handicrafts.
