Dullas-led MPs oppose deals by Basil

Dullas-led MPs oppose deals by Basil Featured

A majority of MPs in the joint opposition alleges the assurance given by Mahinda Rajapaksa to prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe that the support of all opposition MPs will be given to abolish the executive presidency is the first step of a political project involving Basil Rajapaksa.

They are of the view that the intention is to divide the SLFP to give an advantage to the UNP, say joint opposition sources.

They firmly reject attempts to divide the party and are involved in a campaign to unite president Maithripala Sirisena and Mahinda Rajapaksa to take the party on the path to victory.

Leading the campaign is Dullas Alahapperuma, who is presently overseas and alarmed by Basil’s invasion of the joint opposition.

Basil wants new party

Basil says that it is clear to him that the existing challenges cannot be overcome without creating a new party with a new lease of political life.

Both Mahinda and Gotabhaya are supporting him on that account.
