Panama Papers : Govt. alert whether Rajapaksas are involved

A government bigwig has ordered several foreign investigative bodies to ascertain whether former President Mahinda Rajapaksa or his family members are connected to the infamous 'Panama Papers' scandal, reports say.

The Panama papers, a massive cache of 11 million confidential documents shows how a global industry of law firms and big banks sells financial secrecy to politicians, fraudsters and drug traffickers as well as billionaires, celebrities and sports stars.

The leaks, from Panama-based law firm Mossack Fonseca, showed Sigmundur Gunnlaugsson owned an offshore company with his wife but had not declared it when he entered parliament

He is accused of concealing millions of dollars' worth of family assets.

Mr Gunnlaugsson says he sold his shares to his wife, and denies any wrongdoing.

He is one of dozens of high-profile global figures mentioned in the 11.5 million leaked financial and legal records, which were first published on Sunday.
