Tillekaratne's wife Apsara's close association with the Rajapaksa family is said to be the main reason for the former cricketer's decision to support the government.

He was earlier a UNP provincial councilor and the party's chief organizer for Avissawela.

Last February Apsara owing to differences with the UNP had decided along with Tillekaratne to support the government.
