He is commenting on the participation of ex-president Mahinda Rajapaksa and others in a joint opposition rally at Hyde Park, against a party decision.

Rajapaksa’s response

However, Rajapaksa has told ‘Divaina’ that they could not be expelled from the party due to their participation in the rally.

He said that some feared they would form a new party if expelled, and due to that fear they were attacking him and his loyalists, but that that would only make him more popular.

State intelligence reports that 11,000 people at most had attended the Hyde Park rally, noting the grounds cannot accommodate more than 3,000 people.
