Reduce power consumption during peak hours - CEB

The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has requested the public to reduce the electricity consumption during peak hours within the next four days in order to avoid power shortages.

According to the CEB, wasteful energy consumption is a crime for the whole country and this appeal to conserve and effectively utilize energy should be adhered to by the public.

Electricity consumption which averaged 28.5 million units per day has dropped to 26 or 27 million units per day over the past few days, CEB added.

The CEB apologized for any inconvenience caused to consumers through 'compliance with its urgent and desperate appeal'.

The CEB further stated that maintaining the electricity supply to a lesser degree is better than a complete disruption to services which the CEB feels would cause damage to the economy, industry and society as a whole.

The CEB has announced the times of power outages implemented today (March 16) and tomorrow (March 17) until the normal power supply is restored.

Accordingly, a five hour power outage will be in effect during the day and two hours during the night.
