Kumaranatunga said that it was only after the army under Gen. Sarath Fonseka defeated the LTTE that President Mahinda Rajapaksa returned to the country and fell on his knees to kiss the ground at the Katunayake airport.
Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) stalwart and its former secretary Maithripala Sirisena had spearheaded the war against the LTTE during its last stages in 2009 at a time President Mahinda Rajapaksa was away from the country, former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaranatunga revealed while addressing a massive political rally in Matara on Thursday in support of the Common Presidential candidate.
She asked whether it is this same Maithripala Sirisena who was the target of the LTTE now branded a Tiger by the state-controlled media.
The President himself is reported to have told the SLFP's All-Island Council Committee and members of Provincial Councils at Temple Trees on Thursday that it was Maithripala Sirisena who was the acting Defence Minister when he was away from the country when the war ended..
