In the five period from 2010 to 2014, a total of 3,452 court cases were filed in connection with incidents of child abuse, said justice minister Wijedasa Rajapakse.

According to a document he tabled in parliament last week, the highest number of cases in a single year was 1,035 in 2013.

In 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2014, the numbers of cases filed respectively were 567, 575, 749 and 726.

However, the guilty were identified in only 1,633 out of these cases.

Based on these facts, the National Child Protection Authority plans to implement new programmes for the safety of children, said its chairman Dr. Natasha Balendra.

She said the NCPA would ensure that there would be lesser instances of child abuse and harassment this year than 2015.

Dr. Balendra asked the media not to divulge the identities of the victims of child abuse, radiogagana.com reports.
