The newspaper says that Thajudeen, who was the most powerful rugby player of the Havelocks SC at the time, had got in the way of the politician when the latter had attempted to acquire the club.
Police have uncovered much evidence pointing at this, the newspaper further reports.

The burnt body of Thajudeen was found in his burning car near the Shalika grounds in Narahenpita on May 17, 2012.
Police investigations have revealed that attempts were made back then to divert investigations by portraying that this incident had taken place due to a dispute revolving around a young woman.
However, on Feb. 25, 2016, Colombo Additional Magistrate Nishantha Peiris ordered to arrest those responsible for the murder.
According to police sources, several police officers as well as a medical specialist are to be arrested soon, under charges including concealing evidence and crimes as well as destruction of evidence.
Confessions
The police department has identified 16 suspects and it is learnt that the investigation team is to arrest several military officers and a son of a political bigwig.
Also, three individuals involved in the murder have agreed to confess and they are to be produced before courts as state witnesses, police sources further say.
