The land is said to have been cleared for a cultivation and farming project.
Under a Gazette notification Act of 2010, some 47,000 hectares of forest cover in Bakmitiya-Thimbirigolla was declared as a protected reserve.
The Environment Protection Authority has alleged that some one thousand acres of land in Ampara situated in the Bakmitiya-Thimbirigolla forest reserve area have been cleared with the tacit support of Provincial Council Minister ALM Athaulla and Justice Minister Rauff Hakeem.
