Joint opposition wants gen. sec. positions

Joint opposition wants gen. sec. positions Featured

A group of senior SLFP MPs is to request the President within the coming days to appoint suitable persons from the party as general secretaries of the SLFP and the UPFA in order to prevent the division of the SLFP to form a new party, said a spokesman for the joint opposition.

This will be the first step towards uniting president Maithripala Sirisena and his predecessor Mahinda Rajapaksa, said the spokesman.

A division of the SLFP will directly result in a defeat for the party at the upcoming local government polls, and the senior MPs want the general secretary positions given before the election is declared.

Nominees
Accordingly, Kumar Welgama and Dullas Alahapperuma have been nominated as the general secretaries of the SLFP and the UPFA respectively.

However, a majority of SLFP seniors is of the view that it would be more practical if Susil Premajayantha is reappointed UPFA general secretary.

He lost the position for being a Rajapaksa loyalist.
