Speaking in Badulla today (13) the Prime minister said that stern action would be taken against electronic media stations who exceed their limit by insulting women in an unpleasant manner.
Mr. Wickremesinghe was referring to a malicious comment made on TV, against the 'Danno Budunge' song which was sung at a musical show recently to mark the Independence Day.
Noting that electronic frequencies belong to the public, the PM slammed this move saying such goings on cannot be tolerated and more scrutiny would be extended hereafter when granting permits to such channels.
Unconcerned
Noting that it was an important measure to increase the female representation in politics and parliament, the Prime minister said that the pro-Rajapaksa group had caused a commotion in parliament when the Bill was tabled last Tuesday.
It just proves that they have no genuine concern for the women of the country or for their rights, he said, adding that they are merely concerned about their own representation.
No insults
The Prime minister also said that no race or religion should be insulted and a large responsibility on this regard lay with the media.
As an important step aimed at creating a governance where peace prevails among all nationalities, we allowed the National Anthem to be sung in Tamil, he added.
